Topic Two: Pattern and Ornament. Assignment One: Kit & Instructions
These are the instructions and materials needed to build my three-dimensional artwork, which took form based on a simple, two-dimensional drawing.
This is the drawing I made in class.
Materials needed:
-Air Dry Clay; 1/2 to 3/4 lb.
-Cardboard; 1 8x10 piece.
-Acto Knife.
-Adhesive Tape
-Pencil.
-Pencil Sharpener.
-Acrylic Paint; Colors White, Black & Cadmium Yellow.
Step 1
-Mold the clay, using both hands, creating a curved form, compressed on one side, chunky on the other side. It should be 7 to 8 inches long, and 2 to 2 1/2 inches in its wider part.
Step 1.1, side view
-From a superior view, make the compressed side wider, and the chunky side narrower, make sure both sides end in a pointed shape.
Step 1.2, superior view
Step 1.3, inferior view
Step 2
-Sharpen the pencil and make holes in the superior side of the shape, bigger in the center, thinner to the edges. Use the imaginary guidelines to place the holes.
Step 2.1, superior view
Step 2.2 superior view sketch with guidelines
Step 3
-Cut 4 pieces of cardboard, 2 1/2 inches long, by 1 inch wide. Tape two pieces together. cut a rectangular piece in the middle, 3 to 4 millimeters wide, and 1/2 inch long. Do the same to the other 2 pieces of cardboard.
Step 3, two pieces of cardboard taped together, and with the rectangular cut in the middle.
Step 4
-Join the two final pieces by the rectangular cut in the middle, giving the form of an X.
Step 4, the two final pieces joined together with the form of an X
Step 5
-Cut 2 pieces of cardboard 3 x 2 inch, draw a wing in each of them, using only straight lines. Cut through the lines.
Step 5.1, wing 1
Step 5.2, wing 2
Step 6
-Cut 3 pieces of cardboard, 5 inches long, 1 centimeter wide. cut a pointed form in one of the ends. Make 3 cuts wide 1 1/2 inches long, cutting only 40% of the thickness of the cardboard. bend 2 cuts from the pointed end 1 side, 1 cut to the other side.
Step 6, long and thin rectangles bent, like a spider's leg
Step 7
-Insert the X shape into the inferior part of the curved shape made of clay. Insert the two wings into the left side of the curved shape (see in the images for step 7.2). Insert the three spider legs into the right side of the curved shape (see in the image for step 7.2).
Step 7.1, X shape inserted into the curved shape
Step 7.2, wings and spider legs inserted into the left and right sides of the curved shape respectively
Step 8
-Paint the spider legs and the X shape with black. Paint the wings with white. Paint the clay curved shape with cadmium yellow. Let it dry. Paint the holes of the curved shape in black.
Step 8.1, curved shape painted
Step 8.2, X shape painted
Step 8.3, spider legs painted
Step 8.4, wings painted
Step 8.5, holes in the curved shape painted
